Why I Love...To Kill a Mockingbird
To Kill a MockingbirdI think To Kill a Mockingbird is a favorite book of many people.  It is a wonderful, well-written book with strong characters who live during difficult times.  The message is inspiring and emotionally heart-wrenching.  Who doesn't love To Kill a Mockingbird?! (Don't answer that question if you don't. Kidding.)
But this book is rather significant to me for another reason.  That is.  I read it.  Wait.  What?!  See I love reading but there is a category of books that I do NOT like to read.  I don't care how good it is.  I run.  I don't like reading about Slavery or stories concerning racism and the difficulties that Blacks endured in America.  It just hits too close to home.  Oh I know we've come a long way and it is history.  It is important.  But I've really struggled with it.  I mean...my mom attended segregated schools until she was in high school.  That is crazy!  And I'm in my twenties...my mom's not yet 50.  I don't like reading these books because sometimes I see similarities and I wonder how far we've really come.  Are we continuing progress or we better at hiding it?  Yes I know this is a post about why I LOVE To Kill a Mockingbird, but I'm getting there.
So when it was time to read To Kill a Mockingbird, I threw a fit.  I tried to get my mom to get me out of it.  She got me out of watching the movie Roots and reading and watching the movie, The Color Purple (which I have still never read or seen) but this time she wasn't going to help me.  She thought I should read it.  I know everyone knows how I'm SUCH the little ANGEL, but boy did I throw a fit.  It didn't work.  Soo... I went to my teacher and told her that I was uncomfortable reading it, considering I was the only minority in the class and I didn't want to be the "token" black person in discussions.  She bought it and let me out of it.  Well my mom found out and knew it was BS so she called my teacher and told her I was reading it.  My mom....Grr...she can be so stubborn.
So I go to class and receive my class copy.  Fast forward a few hours...and I was done.  I LOVED it!!  See this time I picked a book for Why I Love Wednesdays not only because it was amazing but because it was a learning lesson and an eye-opening experience.  I was fully present for every aspect of that unit, but more importantly, I wasn't allowed to run away.  For this, I am eternally grateful.  I would have really missed out.
I'm not over my issues by any means but I'm better.  I haven't read The Help and don't really plan to.  My friends are trying to peer pressure me into reading it so we'll see.  Just don't get my mom into it.  That lady is stubborn : )
Which books assigned in school do you love? Feel free to create your own post and link up.  Don't want to create an entire post?  Tell me your favorites in the comments.  Thanks for stopping by for another week of Why I Love Wednesdays!!
