Why does my car shake when I hit the brakes? These are just one of the common questions asked by our readers. Since the problem occurs during braking then obviously the problem involves the brakes particularly the brake on the rear.
What happens is that the components of the brakes are not in even contact with each other, specifically, the brake shoe is not in even contact with the drums when braking which will result in the shaking of the entire car. The drums and shoe will not in even contact if there is a warpage on the drums. But there is another reason like worn out or loose rear wheel bearings which cause the misalignment between the shoes and the drums that result in shaking also.
Possible causes of a car shake when the brake is hit
1) Misalignment between the rear brake shoe and drums
2) Worn-out or loose rear wheel bearings
What to do?Bring the car to the repair shop and ask the mechanic to check the rear wheel bearings if it is loose or worn out, if the bearing is bad replace the wheel bearing if the bearing is good then the problem is a warped drum that causes misalignment.
If the drum is warped the drum must be machined to correct the warpage after the drum is machined replace the brake shoe so that it will have even contact with the newly machined drum.
