Donald Trump is not liked by a majority of Americans, and a majority also view him as not doing a good job. But his numbers look great when compared to those of Congress. Congress continues to have an extremely low job approval rating (below 20% in most polls), and a very high disapproval rating (a majority of the public). Why is this?
The two questions above can give us a very good idea of why. They are from a recent Monmouth University Poll -- done between January 12th and 15th (after the 115th Congress started) of a random national sample of 801 adults, with a 3.5 point margin of error.
It shows that only 39% believe Congress gives any consideration at all to the concerns of average Americans when making policy, and 58% believe they give those concerns little (if any) thought.
It gets worse. A whopping 77% say Congress gives more weight to partisan ideological concerns instead of the concerns of average Americans.
This makes Congress' very low approval ratings make sense. Why should the people approve of a Congress that they feel doesn't take their concerns seriously?
