Featuring former members of the Smith Westerns and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Whitney are signed to Secretly Canadian and will appeal to fans of Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver and Midlake. Slightly haunting keys open ‘No Woman’ before a small burst of brass comes in and makes way for a folky ‘60s sound as the band sing all about taking a long journey: ‘Spend some time on the road, then one morning I woke up in LA’ – think Llewyn Davis.
They then go on to list their regrets and question some of their actions: ‘I’ve been going through a change, I might never be sure, I’m just walking in a haze, I’m not ready to turn’. Personal and confessional, the guitars are ever-so-slightly turned up halfway through as the bass also comes in to drive the song towards its climax. There’s also a bit of a Western vibe to the song which seems to suit perfectly, especially when they reveal what they’ve been running away from: ‘I left drinking on the city train to spend some time on the road’.
