Verdict: Slow Mystery Thriller
Story: Whiteout starts as we see a Russian plane crash land in Antarctica before moving to present day. We meet US Marshall Carrie (Beckinsale) who has been working on research base with her connection Dr Fury (Skerritt). When pilot Delfy (Short) believes he sees a dead body on the ice which takes Carrie back onto the ice to investigate.
Her investigation leads her to meet Robert Pryce (Macht) who has been searching for answers from the other side as the two work together to try and discover the truth about what was actually inside that Russian plane to make the men act the way they do.
Whiteout is a mystery thriller that I went into thinking there was an alien involvement much like The Thing and that shows you just how much I actually remember. Going into a good mystery you really need to introduce a large number of suspect but this film only gives us a maximum of 4 which really do read who the bad guys are going to be. We get nothing really stand out happening here because this will end up be a forgettable mystery thriller.
Actor Review
Kate Beckinsale: Carrie is a US Marshall with a haunted past that explains why she is now in Antarctica. She is about to have her last day before finding herself in the middle of a mystery with a killer in the isolated bases. Kate is solid but really just seems to be a big name in the role.
Gabriel Macht: Robert Pryce is a fellow law enforcement authority trying to track down the people who have been involved with looking into what has been happening with the missing plane. He teams up with Carrie to search for the truth. Gabriel is solid supporting character that just doesn’t get enough out of his character.
Tom Skerritt: Dr John Fury has been on the ice for years now, he is the best friend Carrie has down there. He is finally leaving this year to spend time with his grandchild. Tom is just a basic supporting character that never really gets involved.
Columbus Short: Delfy is the pilot that finds the body as well as being the other person that Carrie is willing to trust so easily. He uses his military experience to make his judgments on the ice. Columbus does well but seems to get forgotten by the end.
Support Cast: Whiteout has a small supporting which don’t do much in the actual movie.
Director Review: Dominic Sena – Dominic gets the setting really good but in the end the story is very simple to follow.
Action: Whiteout has basic action which is all snow based action which is hard to see.
Crime: Whiteout throws us into a crime story in the middle of Antarctica.
Mystery: Whiteout gives us a mystery to solve which is easy to solve though.
Settings: Whiteout puts us in the middle of the isolation that is Antarctica which all works for the story.
Special Effects: Whiteout has bad CGI throughout which you can see and does take away from the moments it is involved.
Suggestion: Whiteout is one that can only really be watch late night TV really. (Late Night TV)
