Whisky Review – Scotch Malt Whisky Society Cask No. 29.256, Firemen in Fishnets

Ahhhhhhhh, The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) ...

We've been fans of their bottlings ever since their unique drams first wet our whistle way back in 2007 when we attended our first Single Malt & Scotch Whisky Extravaganza at Philadelphia's Union League.

Pretty shiny packaging.
Off the wall tasting notes.
Wacky names.
Mysterious cask numbering that never reveals a distillery's name.
And most important of all...

Delicious, single barrel, cask strength, non-chill filtered, Single Malt Scotch Whisky!

On this week's episode of A Tasting at The Murder Table, we review SMWS Cask No. 29.256. They call it Firemen in Fishnets, and here's what they have to say about it:

The mineralic tones of a rocky beach touched on dried seaweed and iodine before bellowing tarry smoke brought wafts of kippers, ham hock and burning grass. Blazing driftwood on a bonfire turned to charcoal and soot as ash drifted down onto fish crates and fishing nets. Yet above the heavy fumes sat a layer of burnt toffee and smoked heather honey with delicate floral notes that touched on fresh lavender. The sweetness of a vanilla ice cream cone perfectly offset the char of burnt pork crackling infused with dried herbs and black tea. Smoke and chewy caramel swirled until the end, finishing powerfully with oyster sauce and mussels in brine.

That is most definitely an interesting collections of aromas and flavors, but the question is, do they all come together to create a unique and enjoyable drinking experience?
