Like most whisky bloggers, when it comes to Scotch, we usually lean heavily towards the Single Malts. We don't exactly know why that is, but our guess is that we generally prefer the distinct, individual qualities of a Single Malt (and all of the good and bad that comes with it), versus the more rounded, crowd-pleasing flavors of Blended Scotch. All that being said, there is definitely a time and a place for picking a Blended Scotch Whisky over a mediocre Single Malt (think cruise ship, all-inclusive resort, catering hall, generic hotel bar, etc.), and that time and place just happened to be a quiet Friday night at Krouse Island and The Murder Table...
On today's episode of East Coast / West Whisky Tasting, we've decided to stray from our usual Single Malt addiction and review a Blended Scotch Whisky from Diageo called Johnnie Walker Blue Label. This particular whisky stands at the top of the standard Johnnie Walker range which also includes (in order of exclusivity from least to most exclusive) the Red Label, Black Label, Double Black, Green Label, Gold Label Reserve, and Aged 18 Years expressions.
Here's what Diageo has to say about their Blue Label expression:
Johnnie Walker Blue Label is an unrivaled masterpiece - an exquisite combination of Scotland's rarest and most exceptional whiskies. Only one in every ten thousand casks has the elusive quality, character and flavor to deliver the remarkable signature taste. An extraordinary whisky for extraordinary occasions. While we've had this whisky on several occasions over the years, it's been a really long time since our last taste of this elixir (at least 10 years), so given all that, this felt like we were tasting it for the first time.
