Whisky Review – Four Roses Small Batch Select Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

We're no strangers to Four Roses and have had extensive experience with their core range of Bourbons and several of their Single Barrel Private Selection bottlings. Given that we've gone back to this whiskey on many many occasions, I guess you could call us fanboys.

Four Roses recently added a fourth expression to their core range. They call it the Small Batch Select. Here's what they have to say about it:

Master Distiller Brent Elliott selected and mingled six of Four Roses' 10 Bourbon recipes, each aged a minimum of 6 years, to handcraft Small Batch Select. Non-chill filtered and 104 proof, our newest permanent product-line extension, offers truly unique flavor characteristics. Balancing notes of candied fruit with warmth and spice, Small Batch Select is enjoyable to both casual drinkers and Bourbon connoisseurs. Small Batch Select is best enjoyed straight-up or on the rocks. 104 proof. 52% alcohol/volume.

Small Batch Select launched this past Spring in five states: Kentucky, New York, California, Texas, and Georgia. We're in none of those states. So how did we get a bottle? Easy answer! One of my colleagues at my day job (the one that pays the bills) took a week-long road trip to Kentucky, visited 11 distilleries, and loaded up the trunk of her Mercedes E-class station wagon with 16 bottles of Kentucky's finest spirits. Lucky for us, she was kind enough to gift me one of those bottles which just happened to be the Four Roses Small Batch Select that is the subject of today's episode of A Tasting at Murder Table Studio B.
