Winter is a difficult time of year for many people. The days are shorter, the weather is often cold and grey, and it is easy to just lie on your couch and watch Netflix all day. Going on vacation this time of year is the best way to escape the winter blues and to get yourself active!

Auckland, New Zealand

Auckland is an amazing city on the North Island of New Zealand. September to November is springtime in New Zealand so the weather is very pleasant. Take a walk on the Coast to Coast Walkway and this beautiful 16km walk will erase your winter blues. Visit Mount Eden and explore the area that surrounds this volcano. Take a day trip to the Hobbiton Movie Set and you can explore The Shire and all of its treasures.

Italy

Italy is a fabulous place to go to escape the winter blues, and it has something for everyone. You can rent an apartment in the capital city of Rome and spend your time exploring ancient ruins like the Colosseum and the wonders of the Vatican City.

If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of city life, then you can stay in a countryside villa. Head to Florence where you can see works by the Renaissance greats like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Donatello.

Rome is also perfect for road trips, so rent a car and travel the stunning route along the Amalfi Coast where you will see stunning views of the ocean at every curve of the road.

If you're travelling with your loved one then this is a great time to visit Venice and explore this romantic city without the crowds of tourists which populate the area during the summer months.

Norwegian Cruise

Go on a Norwegian cruise in the winter and you will experience the thrill of seeing the Northern lights at night. It is the ideal place to see one of nature's most amazing displays and you will be amazed by the stunning colours that seem to dance across the sky.

During the day you will glide past amazing fjords that were carved out by the glaciers. You can also visit ancient Viking settlements and explore small villages. Make sure you dress warmly as the temperature will be below 0 degrees Celsius.

French Alps

Taking a break in the French Alps is a great way to beat the winter blues. Spend your days outdoors skiing down the slopes, ice climbing, ice skating, or just exploring the small villages.

Paradiski, and Les Trois Vallees are great areas to head and they are easily accessible by train from Paris and London. These resorts offer world class facilities and you can rent everything that you need for a day on the slopes. If you have not skied before take some lessons until you get the hang of it. You can spend your evenings by the fire meeting new people as you drink glasses of hot wine.

Kerala

The beautiful state of Kerala is on the southwest coast of India and it is a fabulous place for a winter holiday. The weather is great in December and January and you will find it a bit cooler with no chance of rain.

There is plenty to do here, you can try out one of the local surf camps, rent a houseboat and explore the tranquil backwaters, or spend your days trekking. The local cuisine is fabulous and you can get spicy beef dishes, chicken cooked in coconut, and fish so fresh that tastes like it just jumped out of the sea.
