Where is Pompeii?Explore Our 1 Day Pompeii Tour From Rome

Pompeii is famous for its catastrophic ending, the once thriving historic city destroyed by the volcano Vesuvius in 79 A.D. . The entire city and an around 20,000 people buried in a thick carpet of volcanic ash.  Although its story is renowned, the historic city’s whereabouts aren’t as well known.

The History of Pompeii

Pompeii was founded by the Oscans, with the earliest evidence of humans dating back to the Iron age. The city was influenced by the Greeks in the 8th century B.C. and resulted in the city’s upsurge of success. It soon became a rich, thriving city, known as a popular holiday destination for rich Romans. Paved streets with glamorous shops, large brothels, as well as entertainment areas. After the destruction of Pompeii, the buried city remained intact over following years, as it was safe from the climate, weather or looters. The city was rediscovered in the 16th century, archaeologists unearthing the Pompeii city bit by bit. It is now an entire archaeological city with roughly 2.5 million visitors’ annually.

The Location of Pompeii

This ancient Roman town is around twenty-three kilometres from Naples, set just near the west coast of Italy. It is now found in the modern-day region of Campania.  If driving, it takes around two and a half hours to get to Pompeii from Italy’s main city Rome. You can also drive from other popular tourist areas. Naples is a quick thirty-minute trek, Sorrento a forty-five-minute trip, and Florence a whopping four-and-a-half-hour journey (making that adventure more of a road trip.)

How to get there

Car

As stated above, the journey time from most main areas of Italy isn’t terrible and can be mostly done in one day. But be warned, Italy roads can be notoriously busy, so make sure you are comfortable driving for a large part of the day.

Train

Trains are a little bit more straightforward, as all you need to do is buy your ticket and make sure you get on the right train. Enjoy the scenery of the passing countryside as you sit back and relax in your assigned seat. Train prices may go up in price depending on where you are coming from, as well as cabin class choice.

Tour

The easiest and most educational way to travel to Pompeii is by tour bus. This way you can relax while your guide does all the hard work of organising while you hear the facts of Pompeii. Local tour guides know all the secrets of Pompeii, so we suggest taking a tour there to discover the hidden gems of the city.
