Where Are Mahindra Tractors Made?

Mahindra Tractors is a global agriculture farm equipment manufacturer. It is a portfolio company of Mahindra & Mahindra Limited, a multinational company founded in 1945 and headquartered in Mumbai, India with operations spanning from automotive to energy to farm equipment and tractors. Mahindra Tractors became the largest worldwide manufacturer of tractors in 2010. Its primary tractor sales markets are in India, China, North America and Australia.

Mahindra produced its first tractor in 1963, the Mahindra B-275, in a joint venture with International Harvester. Mahindra & Mahindra formed the Mahindra Tractor division in 1977 as it became dedicated to growing its farm equipment business. By 1981 Mahindra Tractors had produced its 100,000th tractor, and by 1983 it became the top selling tractor in India (the world's largest agricultural market). In 2003 the company produced its 1,000,000th tractor, and by 2010 the Mahindra brand became the world's top selling farm tractor. Today Mahindra Tractors operates in 10 countries through operating subsidiaries.

Mahindra's North American Operations

Mahindra started its operations in the United States in 1988 when it exported 143 tractors from India to sell in the US market. Between 1988 and 1994, one man, Rip Evans, led the expansion of Mahindra's efforts in the US market. In 1994, Mahindra formed Mahindra USA as its official US operations and located the headquarters in Tomball, Texas. Today Mahindra USA employs over 8,600 Americans, and its tractors are sold at over 790 dealerships across the United States. It is the #3 tractor manufacturer in North America by market share as defined by AEM.

Mahindra USA oversees five United States assembly plants in Houston, Texas; Marysville, California; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania; and Lyons, Kansas. Mahindra is focused on expanding its manufacturing presence in North America - since 2010 it opened the Bloomsburg and Lyons plants, and management leadership have indicated they look to continue growing the North American footprint over the next five years by doubling its investment and employment.

In 2015 Mahindra launched its Utility Vehicle (UTV) line in the North American market. Rip Evans credits Mahindra's strong growth recently to the introduction of the UTV line. He said that many new dealer partners took interest in the Mahindra line following the expansion into the powersports market.
