When – Then

By Meachrm @BaseballBTYard

Take a look at the following questions and see which one gets your attention a bit quicker.

  1. If a fire should ever occur in your house then what are you going to do?
  2. When the fire starts tomorrow in your house then what are you going to do?

I bet it’s the second one.  Why?  Because it is a “when-then” scenario as opposed to an “if-then” scenario.  A “when-then” scenario is going to occur.  An “if-then” implies that the event may never happen at all.

When you go over situations in baseball, do you coach them with “if-then” statements or do you use “when-then” statements?

Which one do you think your players are going to take more seriously?
