When the Illegal Immigrant Has a License and Auto Insurance

Recently, there has been so much attention on the illegal immigrant in the media that even in the insurance sector we have decided to have our say.

Here it is.

Of all fifty United States, there are only twelve which give driving privileges to undocumented immigrants. In other states, every undocumented immigrant who drives does so without having obtained a license. Without a license, you can bet on your lower dollar that there is no auto insurance to cover an accident. If a legal driver is the innocent part of a collision, not only will there be no coverage to pay for the damage from the other party, but there is likely to be no immediate money to speak of as compensation.

A good reason to invest in the uninsured motorist of uninsured motor insurance, huh?!

In any case, the danger inherent in illegal immigrant driving has prompted the few states that offer some form of driving license to undocumented people to actually expand eligibility. With the invitation of CA, CO, DE, DC, HI, MD, NV, NM, UT, WA and VT to apply for a driving license, the undocumented immigrant who passes the written and driving test is more likely to drive safe and can actually purchase auto protective insurance coverage.

This obviously means that in the event of a vehicle accident, the illegal immigrant who lives and drives in one of the areas where the privilege is open to him can have protection insurance to cover damages.

But the illegal immigrant who passes the driving test necessary to acquire a legal driving license has other more inclusive options which, like any American citizen, can protect him more fully.

These include the options of:

Collision insurance cover: also compensates for the cost of damage caused to the responsible driver

Comprehensive insurance coverage: provides payment for other losses incurred as a result of a car theft, car vandals or damage caused by a natural disaster

Insurance coverage for uninsured / poorly insured motorists: provides coverage for damage resulting from an accident with a driver who does not have adequate car insurance

Regardless of your position regarding residence or citizenship, if you are a legal driver it is advisable to seek assistance and advice from a qualified insurance professional in relation to the insurance coverage options applicable to individual circumstances.
