What to Eat and NOT to Eat During Diarrhea?

Occasional diarrhea is common and usually goes away within 2-3days.  But till the time it stays you have to deal with uncomfortable symptoms – loose, watery stools, uncontrollable urge to pass stools, abdominal cramps, dehydration, and weakness.

The causes of diarrhea can be flu, decayed food or any specific ingredient which your guts couldn’t tolerate.

So, it is very important to know which food you should eat and avoid during diarrhea esp in summer when the chances of dehydration increases.

Having the right food improves the condition and help in soothing your stomach.

#Foods you should eat and drink

1) Drink plenty of fluids

The body loses water due to loose motions and one can feel dehydrated.  In order to replace the lost fluids and essential electrolytes, it is advisable to drink plenty of fluids.

  • Electrolyte water
  • Coconut water
  • Soup Broth

2) Eat bland and simple foods

Eat bland, low fiber and simple foods that are easy to digest and absorb.

  • Bananas
  • Rice
  • Oats
  • Boiled potatoes
  • Rice porridge
  • Bread

3) Probiotics

Probiotics are known to promote digestive health and restore healthy balance by boosting the good bacteria in your gut.

It is available in a sachet which you can take along with water.  Probiotics can also be found in Yogurt.

#Foods to Avoid during Diarrhoea

It is important to know which foods can trigger your condition and should be avoided.

1)   Dairy products– Milk, butter, ice cream, and cheese

Dairy products can worsen bouts of diarrhea as your body has trouble digesting lactose, a type of sugar in milk. Stay away from these foods until you recover completely.

2)   Fried or fatty foods

These foods can aggravate your symptoms.

3)   Carbonated or Caffeinated drinks, such as coffee and soda

4)    Artificial sweeteners

5)   Alcohol

6)   Spicy food

7)   Foods that produce excess gas such as cabbage, beans, broccoli, and cauliflower

8)   Foods with insoluble fiber like nuts, whole grain bread.

9)   processed, packaged food
