Happy November, everyone! October was a great month with all of those horror movies and I’m sorry to see Halloween season drawing to a close, but TCM has some amazing stuff planned for November.
First and foremost, I am so excited for the Star of the Month spotlight on silent film stars. Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd, Swanson, Brooks, Bow, Gish, Pickford, Fairbanks, so many of the greatest stars of the silent film era can be seen this month. Between this and the 24-hours marathons of pre-codes on Fridays a couple of months ago, TCM has been right up my alley lately.
For November’s Friday Night Spotlight, they’ll be showcasing movies about road trips and there are a lot of excellent ones on the schedule.
Without further ado, let’s get to the schedule:
November 2: Tonight’s Silent Sunday Night feature is a TCM premiere of the Marion Davies movie Enchantment at 12:00 AM. I love Marion, so I’m really excited to see this.
November 3: What a line-up tonight! It’s the first night of silent stars and it’s all about the ladies tonight. There’s Mary Pickford in Poor Little Rich Girl at 8:00 PM, Clara Bow in It at 9:30 PM, Gloria Swanson in Sadie Thompson at 11:00 PM, Pola Negri in The Wildcat at 12:45 AM, Louise Brooks in Pandora’s Box at 2:15 AM, Lillian Gish in Way Down East at 4:45 AM.
November 4: A couple of the silent film starlets are carrying over into this morning with Marion Davies in Show People at 7:15 AM, Greta Garbo in Torrent at 8:45 AM, and Alla Nazimova in Camille at 10:15 AM. And then it’s on to a night of Bob Hope movies with The Cat and the Canary at 8:00 PM, My Favorite Blonde at 9:30 PM, My Favorite Brunette at 11:00 PM, The Seven Little Foys at 12:45 AM, The Princess and the Pirate at 2:30 AM, and Road to Bali at 4:15 AM.
November 5: Happy birthday to Joel McCrea! The Sport Parade at 6:00 AM, Bird of Paradise at 7:15 AM, The Common Law at 8:45 AM, Rockabye at 10:15 AM, Bed of Roses at 11:30 AM, Chance at Heaven at 12:45 PM, Gambling Lady at 2:00 PM, Woman Wanted at 3:15 PM, The Most Dangerous Game at 4:30 PM, and Foreign Correspondent at 5:45 PM.
November 6: Jeff Garlin is November’s guest programmer, and he’ll be presenting Meet John Doe at 8:00 PM, Bullit at 10:15 PM, The Third Man at 12:15 AM, and Dodsworth at 2:15 AM.
November 7: For the first installment of this month’s Friday Night Spotlight on road movies, we have Detour at 8:00 PM, The Hitch-Hiker at 9:15 PM, Gun Crazy at 10:45 PM, and Badlands at 12:30 AM.
November 9: All sorts of good stuff on today. Shall We Dance at 10:00 AM, Splendor in the Grass at 2:00 PM, The Goodbye Girl at 4:15 PM, The Navigator at 12:00 AM, and Sherlock, Jr. at 1:15 AM.
November 10: A couple of gems are on this morning, They Won’t Forget at 9:30 AM and Four Daughters at 11:15 AM. And silence is golden again tonight on TCM with Rudolph Valentino in The Sheik at 8:00 PM, Douglas Fairbanks in The Thief of Bagdad at 9:30 PM, John Gilbert in The Big Parade at 12:15 AM, Ramon Novarro in Ben-Hur at 3:00 AM, and Lon Chaney in He Who Gets Slapped at 5:30 AM.
November 11: One more silent film this morning, Ronald Colman in The Winning of Barbara Worth at 7:30 AM. Robert Osborne has selected tonight’s line-up of movies: In This Our Life at 8:00 PM, Tortilla Flat at 10:00 PM, H.M. Pulham Esq. at 12:00 AM, Vacation from Marriage at 2:15 AM, and I See a Dark Stranger at 4:15 AM.
November 13: During the day, there’s Love Affair at 6:00 AM, Sunday in New York at 10:00 AM, Where the Boys Are 12:00 PM, Woman of the Year at 4:00 PM, Pillow Talk at 6:00 PM.
November 14: Tonight’s installment of road movies includes Wild Strawberries at 8:00 PM, Five Easy Pieces at 10:00 PM, Lost in America at 12:00 AM, Wild Boys of the Road at 1:45 AM, and Bound for Glory at 3:00 AM.
November 15: There’s certainly an interesting assortment of movies on today. There’s A Hard Day’s Night at 2:15 PM, Poltergeist at 4:00 PM, Soylent Green at 6:00 PM, On the Waterfront at 8:00 PM, and Dead Ringer at 10:00 PM. I don’t know what kind of theme this is, other than Karl Malden starting in prime time, but I like it.
November 16: Another great day! The Great Ziegfeld at 6:00 AM, China Seas at 9:00 AM, A Star is Born (1954) at 2:45 PM, and Nights of Cabiria at 10:45 PM.
November 17: Silent stars are back tonight with Emil Jannings in The Last Command at 8:00 PM, Janet Gaynor in Sunrise at 10:00 PM, Jackie Coogan in The Rag Man at 11:45 PM, Baby Peggy in Captain January at 1:00 AM, Norma Talmadge in Kiki at 3:15 AM, and Constance Talmadge in Her Night of Romance at 5:00 AM.
November 20: A Stolen Life at 2:15 PM, Possessed at 4:15 PM, and The Birds at 8:00 PM.
November 21: Happy birthday to Eleanor Powell! There’s Born to Dance at 6:30 AM, Broadway Melody of 1936 at 8:30 AM, Broadway Melody of 1938 at 10:15 AM, Rosalie at 12:15 PM, Honolulu at 2:30 PM, Broadway Melody of 1940 at 4:00 PM, and Lady Be Good at 6:00 PM. Then it’s a sharp change from exuberant musicals to road movies like Duel at 8:00 PM, Slither at 9:45 PM, Scarecrow at 12:00 AM, and The Last Detail at 2:00 AM.
November 24: It’s a night of silent film comedians tonight with Chaplin in A Dog’s Life at 8:00 PM, the documentary The Birth of the Tramp at 8:45 PM, Buster Keaton in Seven Chances at 10:00 PM, the documentary Buster Keaton: So Funny it Hurt at 11:00 PM, Harold Lloyd in The Freshman at 11:45 PM, Harold Lloyd’s World of Comedy at 1:15 AM, Charley Chase in Charley My Boy! at 3:00 AM, Fatty and Mabel Adrift at 3:30 AM, Putting Pants on Phillip at 4:15 AM, adn Fast Company at 4:45 AM.
November 28: All Hitchcock, all day! Or at least until 8:00 PM. There’s Saboteur at 7:30 AM, Shadow of a Doubt at 9:30 AM, Dial M for Murder at 11:30 AM, Marnie at 1:30 PM, The Birds at 3:45 PM, and Psycho at 6:00 PM. And the series on road movies comes to a close on a high note tonight with Road to Utopia at 8:00 PM, Sullivan’s Travels at 9:45 PM, and It Happened One Night at 11:30 PM.
November 29: During the day, TCM will be debuting a new feature called Fan Favorites where Ben Mankiewicz will chat with some TCM viewers about some movies they’ve chosen. Today they’ll be talking to my friends Joel, who selected Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid at at 6:00 PM, Aurora, who chose Meet Me in St. Louis at 12:30 PM, Miguel, who chose The Thing From Another World at 4:15 PM, and Paula, who picked The Lemon Drop Kid at 2:30 PM. Later at 8:00 PM, there’s the 1946 version of Beauty and the Beast, which I can’t recommend highly enough.
