Happy July, everyone! Hope everyone is having a nice summer so far. But while it’s tempting to go out and enjoy the nice weather this time of year, TCM has some pretty convincing reasons to stay inside and watch movies.
First of all, in honor of her 100th birthday, Olivia de Havilland is July’s Star of the Month! Since I’m a big fan of hers, I’m certainly looking forward to being able to see several of her movies every Friday night this month.
If you’re a fan of Westerns, you’re going to absolutely love this month’s schedule. TCM is doing a spotlight called “Shane (Plus A Hundred More Great Westerns),” so every Tuesday and Wednesday this month, it’s nothing but Westerns all day long. Westerns aren’t one of my favorite genres, but even I can find a few things to look forward to in that schedule.
Throughout the month, TCM will be doing a series highlighting some of the most definitive films to come out of the 1970s. And last, but certainly not least, there will be a two night spotlight on classic films made by African-American filmmakers, which should be fantastic. Many of the films in that series have never been shown on the channel before.
Without further ado, let’s take a closer look at the rest of the schedule.
July 1: Today, the one and only Olivia de Havilland turns 100 years old so in honor of her birthday, she has her first night as July’s star of the month. Raffles at 8:00 PM, Gone With the Wind at 9:45 PM, The Adventures of Robin Hood at 1:15 AM, The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex at 3:15 AM, Captain Blood at 5:15 AM.
July 2: A couple more from Olivia de Havilland this morning with Anthony Adverse at 7:30 AM, The Irish in Us at 10:00 AM, and Alibi Ike at 11:30 AM. After that, there’s an impressive assortment of great movies like Bad Day at Black Rock at 2:30 PM, Bullit at 4:00 PM, That’s Entertainment! at 8:00 PM, On the Town at 12:30 AM, Sisters at 2:15 PM, and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane at 4:00 AM.
July 3: Only on TCM can you see a day full of musicals followed by a night of Stanley Kubrick movies. On Moonlight Bay at 6:15 AM, Summer Stock at 8:00 AM, Anchors Aweigh at 3:45 PM, Barry Lyndon at 8:00 PM, 2001: A Space Odyssey at 11:15 PM, A Clockwork Orange at 2:00 AM, and Paths of Glory at 4:30 AM.
July 4: Happy Independence Day! Of course, there are a lot of patriotic films on today like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington 3:00 PM, Yankee Doodle Dandy at 10:45 PM, and 1776 at 1:00 AM.
July 5: Today is the first day of TCM’s big spotlight on Westerns. We start off with a lot of early Westerns like The Great Train Robbery at 6:15 AM, The Squaw Man (1914) at 6:30 AM, and Cimarron at 10:00 AM. In prime time, it’s time for some John Wayne/John Ford pairings with Stagecoach at 8:00 PM, The Searchers at 9:45 PM, Fort Apache at 12:00 AM, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon at 2:15 AM, and 3 Godfathers at 4:15 AM.
July 6: The Western spotlight continues into today. By day, there’s a bunch of Randolph Scott movies, but by night, it’s all about Sam Peckinpah with Ride the High Country at 8:00 PM, The Deadly Companions at 9:45 PM, The Wild Bunch at 11:30 PM, The Ballad of Cable Hogue at 2:00 AM, and Pat Garret & Billy the Kid at 4:15 AM.
July 7: The first part of TCM’s spotlight on definitive 1970s cinema starts tonight with All the President’s Men at 8:00 PM, The Candidate at 10:30 PM, Network at 12:30 AM, The Conversation at 2:45 AM, and Klute at 4:45 AM.
July 8: All sorts of good things on today! The Lady Eve at 6:45 AM, Sullivan’s Travels at 8:30 AM, Modern Times at 12:00 PM, City Lights at 1:30 PM, Limelight at 3:00 PM, and The Asphalt Jungle at 5:30 PM. Then it’s time for another night of Olivia de Havilland with In This Our Life at 8:00 PM, They Died With Their Boots On at 9:45 PM, Santa Fe Trail at 12:15 AM, Dodge City at 2:15 AM, and The Charge of the Light Brigade at 4:15 AM.
July 9: Start your Saturday off with more Olivia de Havilland in the delightful It’s Love I’m After at 6:15 AM, The Great Garrick at 8:00 AM, and Call It a Day at 9:45 AM. Then in prime time, you have the chance to see Hedda Hopper in her pre-gossip column days in Alice Adams at 8:00 PM, Downstairs at 10:00 PM, and Men Call it Love at 11:30 PM.
July 14: Spend a day at the beach through film. Where the Boys Are at 10:15 AM, Gidget at 12:00 PM, Beach Blanket Bingo at 4:00 PM, and How to Stuff a Wild Bikini at 6:00 PM. Then it’s back to the 1970s with Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore at 8:00 PM, The Stepford Wives at 10:00 PM, Looking for Mr. Goodbar at 12:15 AM, The Paper Chase at 2:45 AM, and Breaking Away at 4:45 AM.
July 15: Some of Olivia de Havilland’s finest movies are on tonight with The Snake Pit at 8:00 PM, The Heiress at 10:00 PM, To Each His Own at 12:15 AM, Devotion at 2:30 AM, and Wings of the Navy at 4:30 AM.
July 16: A few more from Olivia with Hard to Get at 6:15 AM, Gold is Where You Find It at 7:45 AM, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream at 9:30 AM.
July 18: Louis Gossett Jr. is July’s guest programmer and has chosen tonight’s lineup of Blackboard Jungle at 8:00 PM, Touch of Evil at 10:00 PM, Lifeboat at 11:45 PM, and The Night of the Hunter at 1:30 AM.
July 19: The Western spotlight continues all day today. Clint Eastwood is the man of the night tonight with A Fistful of Dollars at 8:00 PM, For a Few Dollars More at 9:45 PM, The Good The Bad and the Ugly at 12:00 AM.
