Happy December, everybody! Oh, do we ever have a lot to look forward to on TCM this month.
Since we’re now officially in the holiday season, it goes without saying that there are lots of Christmas movies on the schedule this month. But the real highlight of the month is the fact that Myrna Loy is the Star of the Month! If you’re a big Myrna Loy fan, you’re going to want to clear out your DVR as much as possible because every Friday will be (almost) 24 hours of nothing but Myrna. Since Myrna Loy is one of my favorite actresses, I’m pretty delighted by this.
On Tuesday nights this month, TCM will be doing a spotlight on movies that deal with aging. Coming up on December 5th is a day-long celebration of the 90th anniversary of Vitaphone. I absolutely loved attending the presentation on Vitaphone at this year’s TCMFF, so it’s great that TCM is doing this. I’m also very excited to see Amy Heckerling is December’s guest programmer because she has made some excellent choices.
Now, let’s take a closer look at the schedule.
December 1: Of course, there are plenty of Christmas movies to look forward to this month and TCM wastes no time in getting to those. Tonight, you can see The Man Who Came to Dinner at 8:00 PM, It Happened on 5th Avenue at 10:00 PM, O. Henry’s Full House at 12:00 AM, Meet John Doe at 2:15 AM, and Fitzwilly at 4:30 AM.
December 2: It’s Myrna Loy’s first day as Star of the Month and today focuses on her early films. When a Man Loves at 9:15 AM, The Desert Song at 11:15 AM, The Great Divide at 1:30 PM, Noah’s Ark at 3:00 PM, The Show of Shows at 4:45 PM, Myrna Loy: So Nice to Come Home To at 7:00 PM, The Devil to Pay! at 8:00 PM, Arrowsmith at 9:30 PM, Consolation Marriage at 11:30 PM, The Truth About Youth at 1:00 AM, The Squall at 2:15 AM, and Trade Winds at 4:15 AM.
December 5: Where else but TCM can you see an entire day celebrating the 90th anniversary of Vitaphone? There are way too many things being shown here today for me to list individually, so you’ll have to consult the TCM website for more information, but you’ll have the chance to see a lot of early footage of some of the biggest names in entertainment history.
December 6: It’s the first night of TCM’s “golden years” spotlight with Make Way for Tomorrow at 8:00 PM, The Trip to Bountiful at 9:45 PM, I Never Sang for My Father at 11:45 PM, Tokyo Story at 1:30 AM, and Judge Hardy and Son at 4:00 AM.
December 7: In honor of the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, TCM will be showing many related films today, including From Here to Eternity at 2:00 PM, They Were Expendable at 4:00 PM, and Tora! Tora! Tora! at 8:00 PM.
December 9: Ready for more Myrna Loy? Pleasure Cruise is up at 8:00 PM, which I’m delighted to see since I missed that one at TCMFF, followed by Wedding Rehearsal at 9:30 PM, The Man Who Could Work Miracles at 11:00 PM, Topper at 12:30 AM, The Young in Heart at 2:15 AM, And Then There Were None at 4:00 AM.
December 29: Tonight, TCM pays tribute to some of the stars who passed away over the past year. There’s George Kennedy in Cool Hand Luke at 8:00 PM, Gloria DeHaven in Two Girls and a Sailor at 10:15 PM, Alan Rickman in Sense and Sensibility at 12:30 AM, Patty Duke in The Miracle Worker at 3:00 AM, Marni Nixon in West Side Story at 5:30 AM.
