“Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven…And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” (John 6:32, 35)
Types. Symbols. Foreshadows. Bible scholars have chosen many different labels to describe those wonderful treasures found in the Old Testament that point to the great truths of the New. Many of these representations look directly forward to the Lord Jesus Christ: His Person and His work of Salvation. Usually, such gems are mined from the Word of God through diligent study and the leading of the Holy Spirit. Some are buried deeper than others, but happy is the one who sets his pick to digging!
Occasionally, we have the privilege of coming across one of those treasures that is more or less lying right out in the open. Much of the Book of Hebrews, for instance, is an inspired commentary of the Law of Moses and it shows us in no uncertain terms how books such as Leviticus and Deuteronomy relate to our Lord and Savior. And then there are those other instances when we have the interpretation and relevance directly from the Lord Jesus Himself. That the Manna of Exodus is directly related to Christ is indisputable for the Lord said so specifically. With that in mind, let us consider some of the things that are revealed about Jesus in the giving of the Manna:
What Is This That God Has Given?
When the Manna appeared among the camp of the Israelites, they frankly had no idea what it was. They did not recognize the bread that God was providing. When the Lord Jesus appeared among the nation of Israel, they didn’t know Who He was either. What manner of man is this? By what authority do ye these things? Who do men say that I am? Jesus lamented over Jerusalem because they had missed the hour of their visitation (Matt. 23:37, Luke 19:44). The Hebrews on the Exodus March were looking for bread and, when God sent it, they failed to recognize it. The nation of Israel was waiting for a Messiah and neither did they recognize the Bread that God sent to them.
Enough For Everyone
“And when they did mete it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating.” (Exodus 16:18)
The Lord Jesus, the Bread of Heaven, is enough to fill the heartiest appetite and yet will not overfill the smallest. Our fellowship with the Lord is always in direct proportion to the capacity of our faith; the buffet table is filled to overflowing, it is up to us to partake. No one is going hungry today for the Lord because He has not provided enough to eat, we only go without because we choose to. Let us taste of the Lord for He is enough for everyone!
Until next time,
To God goes all glory. In service to Him,
Loren
