Social Networks have entered our lives with such an intensity that it has become very difficult to live without them now. These websites are covering all the aspects of modern living, from schooling, education and going through business, entertainment and communication. There are many social networking services available on the internet but we shall discuss only a few for the purpose of brevity.

Facebook

Facebook was started in 2004. It is a very popular and effective social networking service and has over 900 million users. A person has to register before using Facebook. A person can make a personal profile and can add other people as friends. The service is widely used for exchanging messages. Users can update their profiles and make different groups based on common interests and association. This can render a great service to people working in different organizations, schools, colleges, universities and jobs / professions.

Initially the membership of this website was restricted to Harvard students but later it was extended to others colleges in Boston area. In 2009 Facebook was ranked as the most used social networking website. It is the most popular website to send good wishes to friends on their birthdays, weddings and others events of joy and happiness. Similarly one can contact friends on the events of sorrows and sufferings.

Google Plus

Google Plus is a multilingual social networking and identity service. The service was started in June 2011 and has over 250 million users. The users can see updates from the people who are in their circles. They can have group chats in the hangouts. Google Plus games are located under game tab. Google Plus search is a popular tool among the users.

Twitter

Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service. The aim of this service is to send short messages comprising 140 characters. The service was launched in July 2006 and rapidly became one of the most popular sites with over 500 million users in 2012. Over 340 million tweets are sent daily terming the service as the 'SMS of the internet'. One can follow any one on the Twitter with this the tweets start appearing on the page of the one who followed.

Myspace

Myspace is also a social networking service that was launched in 2003. It is owned by a renowned pop star and hence has a clear tilt towards music, movies and games. Currently the website has over 25 million unique visitors from the US. Apart from having the facility of sending instant messages the site has the applications for playing video games like Zynga and Rock You.

Linkedin

Linkedin is a social networking service primarily for people who are engaged in some profession. The website was launched in 2003 and it has over 150 million users in 2012. The website is operated in different languages and is a useful platform for the professionals from different shades. The users can maintain the lists of other professionals of the same interest. They can upload their resume on the site and can follow different companies and organizations in order to seek the jobs.
