We heard that gemstones, precious stones are diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald.
And we also know that semi precious stones are many, for example : agate, amber, amazonite, amethyst, onyx, aquamarine and so on.
Is that so? Not really. Up to the discoveries of bulk amethyst in Brazil in the 19th century, amethyst was considered a precious stone - going back to ancient Greece. And in the last century certain stones such as aquamarine, peridot and cat's eye have been popular and hence been regarded as precious.
What is a gemstone or precious stone or semi precious stone ? Answer : a piece of mineral, in cut and polished form is used to make jewelry and others. But there is certain rocks and organic materials ( amber ) are not minerals, are used for jewelry, and therefore considered to be gemstones or semi precious stone. Most gemstone are hard but not all as some of soft minerals are used in jewelry because of their luster or other physical properties that have aesthetic value.
Nowadays - not only diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald considered as precious stones. Such a distinction is no longer made by the gemstone trade.
