What is Halitosis?

Bad breath, medically called halitosis and it is associated with certain diseases like oral hygiene is the most common cause. Bad breath causes significant psychological distress and anyone can suffer from this bad breath due to tooth decay and gum disease. It may also be a sign of other health problems. This can get worse by the types of foods you eat and other unhealthy lifestyle habits.

In some cases, it may even cause anxiety. Some products are designed to fight against bad breath like gum, mints, mouthwashes, etc. But many of these products are only temporary measures because they don’t work on the main cause of disease. Other culprits of bad breath are dry mouth, respiratory tract infections, systemic diseases such as diabetes, kidney, liver and lung disease, etc.

Symptoms of bad breath are:

Odors of the bad breath may vary and depends on the source or the underlying cause. Some people worry too much about their bad breath even though they have little, while others have bad breath and don’t even know about it. Because it’s difficult to assess how your breath smells, you have to ask your relative or a friend to confirm your bad-breath questions. If no one is available then for checking the breath you have to lick your wrist, leave it to dry, and then smell it. A bad smell in this area suggests that you have halitosis.
