What is Asherman Syndrome? and How to Cure it Naturally
Asherman’s syndrome is an acquired condition (which you are not born with) that refers to having scar tissue in the uterus or in the cervix (the opening to the uterus). This scar tissue makes the walls of these uterus or cervix to stick together and reduces the size of the uterus. Asherman’s syndrome is also known as uterine synechiae or intrauterine synechiae. Synechiae means adhesions. Asherman’s syndrome is also known as an intrauterine adhesions (IUA)

In severe cases, the entire front and back walls of the uterus can fuse together. In milder cases, the adhesions can appear in smaller areas of the uterus. The adhesions can be thick or thin, and may be sparsely located or merged together

Depending on the range and thickness of the adhesions Asherman’s Syndrome can be;

  • Mild Asherman’s Syndrome- where the adhesions are thin and flimsy and easily torn with a thin instrument.
  • Moderate Asherman’s Syndrome- The adhesion is thicker in this grade with strands of muscular tissue mixed with the fibrous tissue.
  • Severe Asherman’s Syndrome- The adhesions are thick, and there is extensive damage of the endometrium

Symptoms

  • The majority of women who have Asherman syndrome have less or no periods. This could indicate that periods has come, but the blood is unable to leave the uterus because the exit is blocked by scar tissue.
  • Having severe cramping or pain
  • Being unable to get or stay pregnant
  • Some women have no symptoms, and some women have normal periods.

If your periods are sparse, irregular, or absent, it may be due to another condition, such as: pregnancy, stress, sudden weight loss, obesity over exercising, taking the contraceptive pill, menopause, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and uterine scars are also one among them.

How does Asherman syndrome affect fertility?

Some women with Asherman syndrome have recurrent miscarriages and are unable to conceive. Women can become pregnant if she have Asherman syndrome, but the adhesions in the uterus can pose a risk to the developing fetus. Your chances of stillbirth and miscarriage will also be higher than in women without this condition.

Asherman syndrome also increases your risk during pregnancy of:

  • placenta previa
  • placenta increta
  • excessive bleeding

Causes

  • According to the International Asherman’s Association, about 90 percent of women with Asherman syndrome occur following a dilation and curettage (D & C) procedure. A Dilation and Curettage is generally performed following an incomplete miscarriage, retained placenta after delivery, etc.
  • If a Dilation and Curettage is performed between 2 to 4 weeks following delivery for a retained placenta, then there’s a 20-30% chance of developing Asherman syndrome. The risk of developing this condition increases the more D & C procedures a woman has.
  • Scar tissue after a Cesarean section or from sutures used to stop hemorrhages
  • Endometriosis
  • Infections of the reproductive organs
  • Radiation treatment
  • Sometimes adhesions can occur as the result of removal of fibroids or polyps.
  • Sporadic inflammation of the mucous membrane lining the uterus (endometriosis), or endometriosis caused by a pelvic tuberculosis infection or certain other infectious diseases or even certain STDs.

Ayurvedic view in Asherman syndrome

According to Ayurveda asherman syndrome is related to imbalance in tridoshas.Apana vata, which is a type of VATA which is helpful to remove waste and unwanted materials out of the body. Its destruction is due to many reasons but the main one is ama, a kind of toxin produced from undigested foods. This ama can be associated with both pitta or kapha doshas and blocks the apana’s preferred course. Disturbed vata can cause the pains during menses, pitta involves to cause inflammation. As condition goes on, more inflammation is there that causes scars and then adhesions, which leads to asherman’s syndrome.
