8 things I've watched lately, and that you should over Christmas too.
With work wrapped up for the year(!!) and the mood pretty festive, I thought it’d be a welcome break from gift guides and panic shopping and other holiday posts to share a few new things that I’ve been watching lately. I’ve not watched nearly as many things this December as I usually would, in part because of the great post-holiday comedown and also in part because I’ve simply been using the spare time I have to hang with loved ones and play with Milo.
Black Mirror
After a girly catch-up with Cherie and Hanh over dinner at Dishoom, I finally got round to watching the much-talked about Black Mirror. Black Mirror is, in short, a series with standalone episodes that discuss social issues in new ways. The first episode is a bit much but the rest of the episodes are seriously incredible; brilliantly delivered visual think-pieces. If you watch just one episode, make it Season 3’s ‘Nosedive’, a look at social media and rating systems.Barry
A new addition to Netflix, Barry is a pretty interesting look into Obama’s life before he became President. I was totally expecting a deep, inspirational viewing but it’s relatively lighthearted yet poignant and deals with his college life. I’m a huge Obama fangirl and really enjoyed watching this!Cinderella and the Four Knights
… Slap on the wrist for Miss because I literally still haven’t finished this K-drama. I started watching this series in October because I absolutely adore Son Naeun from Apink but also because I hadn’t found something to fill my Uncontrollably Fond void yet. Totally predictable and cliche, I’m really enjoying this series. I have another two episodes to watch (I’ll probably watch them today!) and I’m already sad I won’t have this to dip into. Beautiful wardrobe choices, great music and a pretty photogenic cast.Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life
Last month saw the revival of everybody’s cult favourite, Gilmore Girls! Whilst I’m a newbie to the series and had just finished the original seven seasons only weeks before this was released, I absolutely couldn’t wait to watch this. At first I was a tiny bit disappointed but the four-part series is a brilliant homage to the original and really helped to salvage some of my Star’s Hollow homesickness. It could’ve done with a little more Sookie and a little less Taylor, but what’s new, eh?Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them
Long-term readers of Daisybutter will know just how big a fan I am of all things Harry Potter. And so I suppose it’ll come as a huge surprise that I only just managed to get round to seeing Fantastic Beasts on Wednesday! Of course it was absolutely amazing; I worried for a little bit that it’d kill some of the magic but I absolutely adore American magic and all of its’ new ways! Is there anything J.K. My boyfriend watched all of this series in one sitting and urged me to do the same, so this week has been devoted to binge watching The OA whilst pretending to wrap presents. I’m not sure where to begin describing this series or recounting a synopsis so I’ll just strongly recommend you log in to Netflix and watch it. The OA tells the story of a girl who went missing for seven years and returns to tell her story. Think Stranger Things but stranger. And less scary.BTOOOM!
As a huge fan of Sword Art Online, BTOOOM! has been somewhat of a mind-blowing discovery to satiate my SAO-deprived self. A little more intense, this isn’t quite as great as SAO yet we’ve managed to watch it all in just two days. The anime is just 12 episodes long, making it a great option to watch over the Christmas period. BTOOOM! follows the story of a group of gamers who are taken into a game and must kill in order to win and leave the gaming island. Pretty damn good.Magical Girl Raising Project
And last but not least, something completely the same! Magical Girl Raising Project aired on CrunchyRoll and is a girly version of Sword Art Online and BTOOOM! I watch a huge variety of anime but always come back to the cutesy, magical girl ones and this is totally floating my boat for its adorable artwork and not-gory storyline. The series is 12 episodes and follows a girl who becomes a Magical Girl of her city, but when a new law is passed and it’s declared there are too many Magical Girls, a knock-em-out process is developed.
