On that tragic day, a fifteen year old, Anthony Borges made the life-changing decision to save several lives when he used his body as a shield to protect his classmates from the gunman's bullets.
Borges acted in the most heroic of manners when an armed gunman burst into the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The attacker opened fire on several of Borges' classmates and the youngster, aware of the danger, locked himself and other students in to a classroom to avoid the gunman.
The killer, Nikolas Cruz tried to get into the room but Anthony blocked the door to prevent him from entering. The assailant, a former student of the school, fired various times hitting Anthony with five bullets in his back and limbs. Thanks to his bravery, his schoolmates escaped the attack unharmed.
After the incident, Borges spent most of his life in the hospital and undergoing nine surgeries. The bullets did a lot of damage to the young hero. A third of Borges' lung had to be removed. One bullet came dangerously close to his liver, and three others tore through his legs. For his heroics he was awarded the BET Humanitarian Award.
He is currently homeschooling as he cannot stand a classroom having been suffering both physical and psychological traumas.
