What Does the Cloud That Lights up on the Dashboard Mean?

Posted on the 17 January 2023 by L'Express

When you get in the car and you turn on the ignition, the dashboard immediately lights up displaying all sorts of icons. Admit that after a few seconds, you are often relieved to see that they end up disappearing in the background. Except that sometimes some may continue to flicker. However, unless they are seasoned in the field, many drivers do not necessarily know the exact meaning of all these indicators. It is true that some are easier to guess than others.

However, for your own safety, it is important to know how to read each symbol on your dashboard. Before you even start the car, you must be sure that everything is working properly to avoid any problems. What do you think the cloud sign means? No, it probably does not indicate that the sky is cloudy today. It is therefore important to understand its meaning in order to act accordingly.

The indicators on the car are extremely important!

Reading these symbols is essential to properly maintain your car. This is why it is necessary to become familiar with each of them and monitor them daily. Now, of course, all the symbols that appear on your dashboard are not necessarily warning signs. Some are related to vehicle features such as lights and cruise control or safety related such as blind spot monitoring and lane departure warnings. Others may refer to mechanical issues, including a low tire pressure alert or engine temperature.

When it comes to dashboard lights, colors matter too. Green or blue lights simply let you know that a system is on or running. An amber or yellow light usually means your car needs service or repair soon.

Either way, these warnings are less urgent than when a red (or flashing) light appears on the dashboard. In this specific case, you must act immediately. When it comes, for example, to the symbol of the seat belt, it must be worn quickly, otherwise the indicator light is most often accompanied by a deafening noise. Some red lights may be mechanical, such as engine overheating. If you see such a warning, it is imperative to know the reason to try to solve the problem.

What does the cloud sign that appears on the dashboard mean?

First of all, you should know that this type of warning light is found in cars with diesel engines which are equipped with a catalyst, called a selective catalytic converter (SCR), and which, according to the technical book, works with a AdBlue injection system. Typically, this indicator appears on the dashboard along with the Check Engine Light and the key sign, representing the service period reset, as explained in the tech book. You should know that the AdBlue system has a pump that injects a small amount of diesel exhaust fluid depending on the engine operating conditions. It is a small reservoir with a sensor that stores liquid, so frequent refills are not necessary.

In fact, there are three warning lights on the dashboard that can come on to alert you to any possible problem with the AdBlue system. The first warning light is usually yellow and low level. It happens long before the tank is completely empty so you have plenty of time to refill it. It eventually goes out when the reservoir is filled with more exhaust fluid. Obviously, if you do not fill the tank, the light turns red; you probably won’t be able to restart the engine after turning it off.

If this happens when you are driving, you will have to immediately stop to refuel, otherwise you will not be able to restart the engine. This is a feature designed to prevent drivers from driving long distances without enough exhaust fluid. Again, filling the tank will cause this indicator light to disappear.

Also, if the on-board computer detects a malfunction in the system, the service engine light will illuminate on the panel. This could indicate a problem with the fuel system or with the fluid level sensor. It may still be a signal that the wrong fluid is being used. You will then need a diagnostic scan tool to read the error code and figure out what is going on. Never ignore this light, as using the wrong type of fluid could permanently damage the system.

Is it safe to drive with the AdBlue light on?

Although this light on the dashboard does not actually indicate a safety issue, ignoring the warning will eventually prevent you from starting the engine. Also, when you see the presence of the low fluid level warning, you should not let things drag on. Act quickly on this so you don’t run out of fluid and get stuck. Especially if one of the AdBlue warning lights comes on, certified technicians can help you fill the tank or diagnose any problem you may have.
