What Does Blogging Success Look Like?

Posted on the 11 January 2021 by Emily Underworld @emilyunderworld

I’ve been thinking a lot about success recently. What does success look like for a blogger? Is there a certain length of time, achievement, or number that equates to blogging success?

Here’s the thing: Blogging Success Looks Different For Every Blogger.

What Does Blogging Success Actually Look Like?

What Blogging Success Can Mean

For some bloggers, turning their hobby into a full-time career means success. Maybe quitting your day job is the goal. You might have a specific monetary goal in mind, e.g. earning enough from blogging to pay your bills, or even reaching $10,000 months.

Perhaps your goal is to work on a sponsored blog post with one of your favorite brands!

Other bloggers might not have a monetary goal in mind. Instead, their goals focus on blog views (e.g. 30,000 views a month) or social media stats (followers and engagement rates). What number would mean success for you? Or would the number just keep increasing as you start to reach each statistic?

Some bloggers want to be writers, journalists or photographers. Maybe that’s your goal! In that case, blogging can be a great springboard for career opportunities. You’re building up a portfolio while improving your skills. You never know who might discover your blog, or what might come out of it.

Maybe you’re a hobby blogger, and your overall goal is to just enjoy yourself, connect with likeminded people, and perhaps earn a bit of extra money. Not all bloggers want to make it their full-time career.

Blogging Success Is Different For Every Blogger

What I’m trying to show you is that blogging goals and the concept of ‘success’ means something completely different for each of us!

I’ve been blogging for nearly 7 years, and I’d say that I’m quite successful: I earn money from my blog, I’ve worked with many brands, and I’ve built a community of creative people! However, I’ve certainly not reached all of my goals, and blogging isn’t my full-time job.

Blogging is a journey, and we’re all at different points, with different goals!

Here are my blogging goals at the moment:

  • To consistently earn £1000 a month from blogging, affiliate marketing, and freelancing. This would help me build up my savings, and provide a buffer for times when I can’t work (I have a disability).
  • To reach 50,000 monthly sessions on my lifestyle blog, then apply for Mediavine.
  • To push boundaries with my content: experiment more and enjoy the creative process! This might mean getting over ‘the fear’ of filming myself…
  • To write a guest post for an established publication. I’m aiming to build up a freelance writing portfolio.

I haven’t set a time limit on these goals, because I’m in no rush. We will see what 2021 brings. My priority is to enjoy myself, I don’t want to be stressed!

I realised that I’m only competing with myself. I’m learning, improving and evolving. So are you! Remember that there is no single pathway to success. Doing what other bloggers are doing doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll “make it”. Besides, what does “making it” actually mean to you?

I’ve stopped comparing myself to other bloggers because we all have such different goals and strengths. I really recommend focusing on your own work, and reflecting on what you personally view as success. Consider success by your own standards, not other people’s.

Why do you blog, and what are your personal goals? What do you think blogging success is? It’s worth thinking about these things, to make sure you’re following the right path!
