BeforeAfter head shaving
I’m still recovering from the events of this weekend. My son turned 6 on Friday, I turned 35 on Saturday and shaved my head for St. Baldrick’s and childhood Cancer that day before rushing off to my son’s Chuck E. Cheese birthday party.

Sunday I laid low most of the day before having a mini date with my husband. FYI, the place we went to must have been a throwback to 1950 because when I paid for our meal (you know with our joint bank account) someone actually told me I shouldn’t be paying for it, that my husband should be paying for his woman. That led to me picking on my husband for the rest of the night for not doing things like carrying my packages and opening the car door for me, this frail woman incapable of signing her name and carrying my own stuff and opening doors.

Good times, I tell you. But really, what I’m getting at here is not the sexist attitude of some drunk patron at a bar and grill my husband and I went to for our rare night out without kids, but the amazing outpouring of support I have gotten after I shaved my head on Saturday.

When I went to the hairdressers Saturday morning I had raised just over $300 for St. Baldrick’s. Which was great, but that was two months of fundraising. By the time Saturday was over I was up over $700 thanks to so many generous donations and of course my partner in crime who shaved with me. It’s a far cry from my $5000 goal, but I’m proud of it none the less. I know it will be a great help to childhood Cancer research.

And don’t worry, I’m still fundraising. I will probably keep this going until the end of the year at least.

My birthday presents have consisted of hats and scarves, but one very thoughtful gift came from what I would consider an unlikely source. I got this little teddy bear…

Wearing a monkey hat mind you which is fitting since my youngest is completely monkey obsessed. But the real thoughtful part was underneath that hat…

I don’t know if you can really see it, but that’s a bald teddy bear. She gave the bear a haircut to look like me, but that’s not all…

On the tag she wrote about what I did, shaving my head. So now even though my hair is going to grow back and I get to have all kinds of fun experimenting with hair styles that I never would have had the guts to try before this very drastic move; I will forever have this memento of what I did and when I did it. My reminder of my good deed.

So that was my weekend. My hair is already starting to grow back in. I’m planning wild and crazy things including a tattoo on my neck. I don’t know that I’ll follow through with any of those things. I really stepped outside of the box by doing this to begin with.

I miss my hair, but not for the reason you may think. I miss it because I’m freezing. If I ever do this again it will be in the summer when it’s warm.

So many people in my life have made this birthday weekend one for the memory books for sure. And I am forever thankful to each and every one of you. To all of my donors, to my family, to my friends, to my shaving buddy, to my hairdresser, and to each one of you who spread the word. You all have made this so amazing. My bald head thanks you. Together we are making a difference in the lives of children now and for years to come and that feels really great!

Have you made your donation to St. Baldrick’s yet?
