Weekend Box Office: ‘Transformers’…. GOOOOOOAAAAL!

Posted on the 30 June 2014 by Sirmac2 @macthemovieguy

With the world cup going on, I thought the title would be funny. It’s a little embarrassing but I’m going to stick with it.

1) Transformers 4- 100M Weekend, 100M Total

Rocking theatres with a 23K PSA and an international cume of 301M, the fourth Transformers film posted the 2nd highest opening of the franchise, and the fourth highest opening for June… ever. With a production budget estimated at 210M, Transformers 4 had to hit a high mark in order to be a success, and it did. No wonder Transformers 5 is already in the works. With next weekends biggest release being Tammy, it’s likely that Transformers will repeat the #1 spot next weekend as well.

2) 22 Jump Street- 15.4M Weekend, 139.8M Total

Dipping 43% in week three, 22 Jump Street held onto the 2nd place spot, as Kevin Hart’s Think Like A Man Too plummeted. 22 Jump Street almost has a worldwide total of 200M.

3) How To Train Your Dragon 2- 13.1M Weekend, 121.8M Total

Despite glowing reviews, and being virtually the only kids film in the marketplace, How To Train Your Dragon 2 dropped another 47% in week three. Its worldwide cume is at 227M.

4) Think Like A Man Too- 10.4M Weekend, 48.1M Total

Kevin Hart’s comedy dropped 64% in week 2. Not a promising start, and if those drops continue, it won’t surpass the gross of the original.

5) Maleficent- 8.2M Weekend, 201.8M Total

Angelina Jolie’s latest broke 200M this weekend, and now has a worldwide cume of 585M. Maleficent is now in the Top 100 films worldwide (#96), and in the Top 150 films domestic (#142).

6) Jersey Boys- 7.6M Weekend, 27.3M Total

Jersey Boys dipped  a promising 42% in week two.

7) Edge Of Tomorrow- 5.2M Weekend, 84.1M Total

Down another 46%, Tom Cruise’s latest is really close to passing Oblivion. Even though it might be viewed as a flop, it has a worldwide gross of 318M, which shows Cruise’s star power overseas.

8) The Fault In Our Stars- 4.8M Weekend, 109.5M Total

This teen lit drama seems poised to break 200M worldwide sometime next weekend. Not bad for a film about kids dying of cancer.

9) X-Men: Days Of Future Past- 3.3M Weekend, 223.3M Total

With 712M Worldwide, the film sits at #60 on the all time chart, and #109 on the all time domestic chart. It is also currently the top 2014 release.

10) Chef- 1.6M Weekend, 19.4M Total

Dipping only 3.2% from last weekend, Chef is the little movie that could this summer.

11) Godzilla- 1M Weekend, 197M Total

Should Godzilla be unable to muster up another 3M before the end of its run, it’ll be the first film to open over 90M, and not cross 200M… ever. In fact, you can go down to 85M and find X-Men: Origins Wolverine, which is the current record holder for Highest Opening Weekend That Didn’t Break 200M. Godzilla’s opening was 8M higher than that. Don’t feel too bad, it does have an international total of 488M.

??) Obvious Child- 556K Weekend, 1.2M Total

This indie comedy (which may or may not be about abortion) got a ton of free press thanks to some kerfuffle at NBC. It didn’t translate into a great per screen though, which was only 2,837 from 196 screens. Jersey Boys had a better PSA.

??) Snowpiercer- 162K Weekend, 162K Total

Backed with some stellar reviews (93% on Rotten Tomatoes!), Snowpiercer managed a 20K PSA. Not bad.

??) Begin Again- 148K Weekend, 148K Total

An even stronger PSA from this weekends other Weinstein release (the other being Snowpiercer). The well reviewed (73% RT) Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley sundance hit managed a 29K per screen average.

??) The Rover- 101K Weekend, 980K Total

They tried to take this film wide, but no one cared. It now sits in 247 theatres making 409 per screen average. If the average person paid 10 dollars per ticket, that would mean about 13 people see the film… each day. Not each showing… but the entire day.

??) Third Person- 80K Weekend, 136K Total

Paul Haggis’ latest film starring Liam Neeson, Adrien Brody, and Mila Kunis, was panned by critics (20% RT) and is doing mediocre box office (4,483 PSA).

??) America- 39K Weekend, 39K Total

The “sequel” to 2016: Obama’s America opened so-so, doing only 13K PSA from three theatres. It supposedly goes wide next week.

??) Venus In Fur- 28K Weekend, 68K Total

Roman Polanski’s latest has been largely forgotten, despite strong reviews (89% RT). A per screen average of 2,800 is not good enough to expand upon.
