Weekend Box Office Projections: Elysium Takes an Early Lead

Posted on the 10 August 2013 by Sirmac2 @macthemovieguy

1) Elysium- 11.1M Friday, 30M Weekend, 30M Total

Elysium took the box office by quiet storm on Friday, easily winning the day. However, Elysium has only received a B cinemascore, which is below both We’re The Millers and Percy Jackson. That could spell disappointment in future weekends, as word of mouth won’t be able to keep this film steamrolling along.

2) We’re The Millers- 8.5M Friday, 25M Weekend, 37M Total

Millers continues to surprise, edging out Planes on Friday. The question is whether or not Planes will receive a huge bump on Saturday. Right now, it looks like Millers should get the win.

3) Planes- 8.1M Friday, 24M Weekend, 24M Total

Planes managed 8M on Friday, and should turn in a decent weekend. If it gets a nice bump on Saturday, it might surpass Millers. It got an A- cinemascore from audiences, which will go a long way in making Planes a hit. Remember, this was supposed to go straight-to-video, so this is already a profitable sequel.

4) Percy Jackson 2: Sea Of Monsters- 4.9M Friday, 15M Weekend, 24M total

Percy isn’t getting much bigger, and has maintained about the same strength since opening on Wednesday. It is unlikely it will match the 88M of the original domestically. Unless this film performs 200M+ overseas, I don’t see there being a third Percy film.

5) 2 Guns- 3.4M Friday, 11M Weekend, 48M Total

Denzel and Wahlberg dropped  to 5th place. It was inevitable. It is down 65% from last weekend, which is probably a bit steep, but there were four strong new entries also.

6) The Smurfs 2- 3.1M Friday, 10M Weekend, 47M Total

The Smurfs slid ahead of Wolverine this week, despite two new kidpics opening. I didn’t see this happening. I thought this sequel was down for the count.

7) The Wolverine- 2.4M Friday, 8M Weekend, 112M Total

The Wolverine is still facing harsh drops each week. With this pattern, it might top out around 130-135M, which is low for a franchise like this, and disappointing considering the film is actually better than its predecessor.

8) The Conjuring- 2.1M Friday, 6.5M Weekend, 120.5M Total

9) Despicable Me 2- 1.8M Friday, 6M Weekend, 338.8M Total

10) Grown Ups 2- 1.2M Friday, 3.5M Weekend, 123.9M Total
