Weekend Box Office: ‘Mission’ Possible. Tom Cruise Opens Above Projections.

Posted on the 02 August 2015 by Sirmac2 @macthemovieguy

Tom Cruise managed the 2nd largest Mission Impossible opening and the third largest of his career with Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, which showed the power of good reviews, grabbing an A- from Cinemascore and a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Not bad for the fifth outing of an 18 year old franchise. Speaking of old franchises, the Vacation reboot didn’t go as planned. With under 15M opening weekend, a weak 23% on RT, and a B cinemascore, Vacation is not going to be the sleeper hit of the summer.

Holdovers continued to do well. Ant-Man was off 49%, Minions dipped 46%, Southpaw dropped 55% which was better than the 56% of Pixels or the 63% of Paper Towns. The End Of The Tour did the best of the new limited releases, with a 31K per screen average. The LEGO Brickumentary was DOA with a PSA of $452. Listen To Me Marlon did OK with a 14K per screen. Continuing to do well with slow expansions is Irrational Man, Woody Allen’s latest, which is now in over 100 screens with a PSA of 3,778.

Next week, Fantastic Four hopes to prove it’s not awful (as rumors persist, following a review embargo), Ricki and the Flash goes after mature audiences, Shaun The Sheep goes after young audiences, and The Gift has been getting surprisingly really good reviews.
