Weekend Box Office: ‘Lucy’ Assassinates ‘Hercules’

Lucy took the top spot at the weekend, overperforming by a lot. With a rumored budget of 40M, Lucy will be turning profit. However, audiences are divided, and the film received a low C+ cinemascore. Next weekend will belong to the Guardians, who are tracking as high as 80M right now. Hercules cost more, at 110M, but already pulled in a decent amount overseas (basically equivalent to what it made domestically), so it’s about halfway there. Hercules also performed better in the cinemascore with a B+. Not amazing, but it could have stronger legs than Lucy. This weeks other new release, And So It Goes flopped, also maintaining a B+ cinemascore. Newbie distributor Clarius is going to need to do better, or it’ll join other defunct studios like Artisan in the junk bin.

In limited release, A Most Wanted Man surprised all and cracked the Top 10 with a PSA of 7K. The Fluffy Movie failed to crack the Top 10, earning only 1.3M, and an OK PSA of 2.9K.

Among holdovers, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes dropped an OK 55%, The Purge: Anarchy dove 65%, and Planes 2 dipped 48%, Sex Tape lost 59%. Planes 2 had the softest drop of holdovers in the Top 10.
