Denzel Washington scored the 4th highest September opening ever this weekend, and the 3rd highest opening of his career with The Equalizer. Audiences loved it, giving it an A- cinemascore, suggesting the film might also have legs. The other new release was The Boxtrolls, which did alright for a stop-motion animation film, and got a B+ from audiences.
Last weeks new films were mixed this weekend. This Is Where I Leave You had the softest drop at 39% (second best in the top 10), while The Maze Runner dropped a respectable 46%. Not so respectable? A Walk Among The Tombstones which dove 66% in week two. Also, Tusk dove 67%.
In limited release, The Skeleton Twins almost cracked the Top 10 in only 385 screens. A great 3,278PSA should help it moving forward. That PSA is higher than every film in the Top 10 except the top 3. Also of note, the British import Pride opened with an OK 14K average in week 1. It didn’t explode, it just landed OK. Perhaps word of mouth will build. Christian drama The Song bombed with only 1,765PSA, which is less than No Good Deed pulled in per screen this weekend.
Next weekend, the highly anticipated Gone Girl finally opens, against The Conjuring spinoff Annabelle, and Left Behind.
