We Should All Be Feminists by @ChimamandaReal

By Pamelascott
'I would like to ask that we begin to dream about and plan for a different world. A fairer world. A world of happier men and happier women who are truer to themselves. And this is how to start: we must raise our daughters differently. We must also raise our sons differently...'

What does "feminism" mean today?

In this personal, eloquently argued essay - adapted from her much-admired TEDx talk of the same name - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie offers readers a unique definition of feminism for the twenty-first century, one rooted in inclusion and awareness. Drawing extensively on her own experiences and her deep understanding of the often masked realities of sexual politics, here is one remarkable author's exploration of what it means to be a woman now - an of-the-moment rallying cry for why we should all be feminists.

I've heard a lot of praise heaped on this essay and the TEDx talk so I've wanted to read it for a long time. I thoroughly enjoyed this essay. Writing and talking about gender is something a lot of people still feel uncomfortable about which is quite a shock considering it's 2021. Why are we still applying out-dated and often harmful stereotypes to gender and sex today? I found this very well written and thought-provoking. I can honestly say I've never really experienced sexism or gender bias, well not that I'm consciously aware of anyway. I have been called things like 'girly girl' but not for a long time. Maybe it's because I'm a lesbian and have managed to avoid it. Who knows? Adichie does a brilliant job of shining a light on an issue that has more impact than a lot of people realise. Fascinating stuff.
