Verdict: Scooby Doo Like Horror
Story: Waxwork starts as we see a robbery murder before we meet our leading man Mark (Galligan) who has had a privileged life that he just wants to escape from. Mark is in college where we he has friends that take him into the with Sarah (Foreman), China (Johnson) James (Brown), Gemma (Carey) and Tony (Ashbrook). Mark agrees to go to a newly formed Waxworks with Sarah, China and Tony for a midnight show where each exhibit has its own story.
As the friends explore they find themselves being sucked into the stories the waxworks are telling where they find themselves becoming part of the art work. Mark has to work with Sarah to get to the bottom of their missing friend’s locations and bring down the waxworks once and for all.
Waxwork is a horror comedy that fits in perfectly with the 80’s when it was released. The film gives us a great feeling of the time period with the story of the villain trying to release evil upon the world. I do feel like the plot feels like a Scooby Doo movie but really is one that could be enjoyed by all. When everything goes down it is completely bonkers though.
Actor Review
Zach Galligan: Mark is from a wealthy family but like all late teenagers is constantly bored. Wanting to break away from his restrictions he heads to a waxwork with his friends but soon finds himself needing to fight to survive against an evil from within. Zach is solid in this role where he becomes the go to guy in horror during the 80’s.
Deborah Foreman: Sarah is the friend that never gets noticed by the guys at school, she is the best friend of China but finds herself alone with the Mark trying to discover the truth. Deborah is a solid supporting role without really excel.
Michelle Johnson: China is the popular girl at the school who gets all the attention from the guys, she has Mark under her spell and is the main one to get invited into the Waxwork with friends. Michelle is solid in what is an easy to play supporting role.
David Warner: Waxwork Man is the owner of the waxworks, he brings the guests in before pushing them into the world’s created. He is well spoken making an excellent guide. David is good in this role as the typical English bad guy.
Support Cast: Waxwork has a basic supporting role that are basically just used for disposable characters.
Director Review: Anthony Hickox – Anthony does give us what would be considered a typical 80s horror film.
Comedy: Waxwork has moments of comedy throughout the film without being a full comedy.
Horror: Waxwork has a great mix of horror as we deal with all the creatures involved.
Settings: Waxwork has the settings of the waxworks which is brilliant because of all the worlds we see get created.
Special Effects: Waxwork has great effects for everything throughout the film which the man’s leg being the highlight.
Suggestion: Waxwork is one you could try as for horror fans which works for cheesy fun. (Try It)
Best Part: Charles is found effects.
Worst Part: Sometimes too much going on.
