Waxahatchee has returned with new single ‘Fire’ ahead of the release of new album ‘Saint Cloud’ on 27 March via Merge Records.

Dreamt up while driving over the Mississippi River from Memphis into West Memphis, AR, Katie Crutchfield describes the song as ‘written by me, to myself’ and how ‘it’s about the internal dialog of shame surrounding mistakes you’ve made in the past and how we spiral and beat ourselves up when we slip.’

Opening with more of a fractured, atmospheric and far-reaching synth-led sonic sound then before, the song finds Katie demanding ‘Give me something’ (and later admitting ‘it ain’t enough’ before opening her heart about how difficult she finds it to get away from thoughts of past action: ‘I take it for granted. If I could love you unconditionally, I could iron out the edges of the darkest sky’ while the sound veers somewhere between intelligent alt-pop a la Hop Along to quirky Americana in the vein of Vampire Weekend’s newest material.
