Water Fountains: a Ubiquitous Fixture in Zurich

Often referred to as the financial captial of Switzerland, Zurich is an eclectic city that offers a host of interesting sights which include its lake, unique museums, chocolate stores and high street shopping arenas. But one thing that catches your attention as your tour this city, is the presence of water fountains everywhere. While this may sound a bit strange at first, it is interesting to note that there are as many as 1224 water fountains in the city.

In fact, chasing water fountains is indeed a fun thing to do in this metropolis. From main stations to narrow alleys to roundabouts, you never fail to spot a fountain. They come in a plethora of sizes, shapes and detail. From simple structures with just a tap to highly carved ornate creations, the world of Zurich water fountains is indeed quite fascinating.

Irrespective of the size, location and type of structure, it is significant to note that each of them dispense clean drinking water. These fountains are meticulously maintained by Stadt Zurich which ensures that the water is safe for drinking through timely inspection and water quality checks.

Some of the fountains like the one in Renweg area of the city date back as early as the 15th century. Decorated with a female figure, it is often regarded as a work of art. Another fountain with historical importance is the Lindenhof fountain which was installed in 1912 as an ode to the brave women of the city who protected it from being captured by the Austrian army in the 13th century.

The fountain at Zurich main station is something you cannot miss. Named after the railroad pioneer Alfred Escher, this one has been in operation since 1889.
