Two clips of musical excerpts performed earlier today at the press preview--the scenes obviously chosen to highlight The Phantom of the Opera's main strengths: vocal fireworks and visual opulence. The first features the last bars of the title song, sung (impressively) by Jonathan Roxmouth as the Phantom and Claire Lyon as Christine. The second is from the spectacular Masquerade set piece that opens Act 2, the bad-ass moment for the musical's lavish production design and Maria Bjornson costumes. Oh, by the way, that ravishing sound coming from the pit? Fourteen of the 17-strong orchestra are Filipino musicians. Bravissimi!
