In order to remain relevant in our increasingly disintegrating capitalist hellscape, at least one corporation is introducing something new that is related to NFTs or the metaverse in 2022. The results of the wheel today were Walmart, Roblox, and “The Metaverse.”
The wildly popular online game Roblox is getting two new virtual worlds from retail behemoth and terrible corporation Walmart. These virtual Walmart worlds, according to CNBC, will have items that are completely nonexistent at any real Walmart anywhere in the globe, such as a blimp that drops toys, music festivals with well-known performers, and free-to-play mini-games and activities. Oh, and allegedly there is a virtual shop called “Verch” where individuals can purchase virtual goods. This word, which I now know has been used for a while, makes me feel both frightened by it and sorry that I had to learn about it.
“Walmart Land” and “Walmart’s Universe of Play” are the names of these two new Roblox experiences. Both were introduced earlier today on Roblox.
Walmart’s chief marketing officer, William White, stated that the company is using these new Roblox worlds as a sort of “testing ground” as it considers investing in the metaverse, which is a silly concept with no real definition other than being a buzzword attached to a large number of unrelated projects and ideas. The experiences, according to White, were created to appeal to the “next generation of buyers,” notably those who are 25 years old or younger. Now read along with me what this person actually stated about Walmart and Roblox in their own words:
“How are we driving relevance in cultural conversation? How are we developing community and engagement? How are we moving the needle from a brand favorability [standpoint] with younger audiences?” White said. “That’s what we’re trying to accomplish here.“
Walmart applied for metaverse-related trademarks earlier this year, which appears to be a sign that the corporation has bigger plans for virtual money, digital goods, and possibly NFTs.
White declined to comment on the actual usage of any of these trademarks, but come on…
Walmart won’t now profit directly from these new “immersive experiences,” but in the future it may offer brands access to them. It was also argued that these Roblox environments would persuade users to switch from purchasing at Walmart virtually to doing it in person or online.
Users may locate and play several games that include some of the best-selling toys this year, such as Paw Patrol and the characters from Jurassic World, in Walmart’s Universe of Play, for instance. It is intended that children play these games, become enthusiastic about these toys and companies, and then pester their parents to purchase these items from Walmart. The other Roblox world uses a similar strategy and has a sizable obstacle course made up of products from Walmart’s Gen-Z-targeted beauty and cosmetics brands. Additionally, there is a virtual changing room with apparel and accessories from Free Assembly, the company’s own fashion line.
Yes, the metaverse is merely a new way to attempt and sell more crap to people and young kids online, for those who have been largely avoiding all this rubbish. Of course it is, I mean. Because of this, a lot of businesses are attempting to enter the metaverse even before it has been formally founded or defined.
