Vogue Magazine Names South Coast as This Winter’s Hottest Travel Destination

International fashion and lifestyle magazine Vogue has named Sri Lanka’s South coast as this winter’s hottest travel destination.

The magazine says the region’s balmy surf season, from December to May, aligns perfectly with the Northern Hemisphere’s winter, drawing wave-chasers and a vibrant influx of local hospitality and culinary projects.

The 60-mile arc stretching from Hikkaduwa in the west to Hiriketiya in the east-that’s become known as a surfing sweet spot.The Vogue notes that Sri Lanka has overcome past difficulties and today, the country stands resilient.

“Improved airline services, a new political era under President Anura Dissanayake and strategic visa policies have revitalised the tourism industry, which is set to break earning records in 2025”.

The magazine says Sri Lanka’s landscapes are vast and varied, welcoming and wild.

“This island nation of 22 million is a place where leopards slip like a whisper through the undergrowth, blue whales breach offshore, tea estates paint the hill region a lush green, and ancient Buddhist and Hindu temples whisper stories of centuries past. The magazine adds that in the coastal towns, surfers line the golden sand beaches and tuk-tuks zip along twisting roads, their horns blending with the rhythmic clink of fishmongers’ knives and the sizzle of hoppers frying in street stalls.

“Plates heaped with rice and aromatic curries showcase the island’s culinary riches, while orange king coconuts are cracked open and offered as a sweet, refreshing balm to the humid heat”. The magazine highlights the country’s pristine beaches, abundant wildlife, tranquil tea estates, and unique cultural experiences and the recognition comes as a significant boost to Sri Lanka’s tourism sector.
