Viral Video Shows Shanghai Crowds Running To Escape Lockdown

Posted on the 17 August 2022 by Geetikamalik

A video that became viral on social media showed a chaotic scene at an IKEA shop in China’s Shanghai, with buyers who tried to escape and the authorities tried to quarantine them. According to CNN, the incident occurred in the Xuhui District on Saturday when the health authority moved to lock the shop after the Covid-19 case was traced to the location. The Chinese government has pinned two severe locks in Shanghai earlier this year to curb the spread of Coronavirus as part of the country’s “zero-covid” strategy. The video shows the guards who tried to close the door, but the crowd forced them to open to escape from the shop.

Other videos from inside the store show that the locals shout and encourage each other in an effort to escape from the building when the announcement explodes above the sound system which says that the mall is locked up because of the Covid contact search. The Reuters news agency reported that Shanghai, the most densely populated in China, reported five new Coronavirus local infections, all without symptoms, on Saturdays, while 2,467 cases that were transmitted domestically were reported nationally. This has extended the COVID-19 weekly test requirements and expanded free testing until the end of September in an effort to keep the virus under control.

CNN quoted the Deputy Director of the Shanghai Health Commission Zhao Dandan said that “the store and the affected area” would be under the management of the “closed loop” for two days. According to the BBC, the person who caused the authorities to seal the shop was close contact from a six -year -old boy who was tested positively after returning to Shanghai from Lhasa in Tibet. However, Zhao did not say when close contact was believed to be in the store.

On Sunday, nearly 400 close contacts of a six -year -old boy were tracked while 80,000 people had been ordered to undergo PCR testing, BBC reports further. The South Hainan Province is currently the worst hit region in China, with 594 cases of symptoms and 832 cases without symptoms reported on Saturdays for the previous 24 hours.
