Sri Lanka national men’s hockey team led by Irish Gunawardena started with a winning note when they beat Singapore 5-2 at the Asian Games qualifying Hockey tournament played at Bangkok, Thailand on Saturday.
Singapore made an early lead scoring two goals in the 13th and 18th minutes through Yuhair M. Sabri and Yap Wee Lee. Sri Lankan stickers fought back with more confidence scoring three quick goals by Vipul Dhanushka Fernando at the fourth quarter which paved the way to get this remarkable victory.Vipul Dhanushka was adjudged the Player of the Match for his good performance.
Earlier Chaturanga Chandrasena scored the first goal at the 27th minute of the second quarter while Bodhika Dias scored a second goal through the penalty kick to get good start for Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka placed in Pool ‘B’ with Bangladesh, Indonesia and Singapore will face Bangladesh tomorrow (10) in their group match.
Last time in 2018 Sri Lanka won bronze medal in this qualifying tournament while Bangladesh won silver. This time again Sri Lanka is looking to qualify for the Asian Games which has now postponed to next year and will work off in China due to Covid 19.
