Casa Aguiar is overdue for another road trip to the south of Portugal, partly to explore and partly to return to some places where we didn’t spend enough time.
One of our favorite sections on that trip was the Costa Vicentina, of Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina (map) which occupies the southwest corner of the Alentejo region. The town of Vila Nova de Milfontes is at the top end of the park, the last bit of civilization before Sines. The town itself was not what I remember, but the way the beaches were sheltered and spaced apart on both sides of the Mira River and facing out to sea. With this layout it seemed that everyone could claim their own stretch of sand, undisturbed, and choose between a dip in the Mira or a bob in the Atlantic. You know life is good when that’s the biggest decision for the day.
