So with last night’s episode of Supergirl (Reign 3×09) we were left with quite the cliffhanger.
We’ve got a little more than a month to wait for the return of new episodes on January 15th. The CW dropped the trailer and it’s only giving us more to be excited about and leaving us with more questions.
The last we saw Kara (Melissa Benoist), she was on a medical table in the DEO trying to be saved by her sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh), after being given quite the beat down by Reign (Odette Annable). It seems like we are going to see Reign wreck havoc on National City in Supergirl’s absence as she hopefully heals up. It appears to be that Kara is put in a tank, perhaps one of the pods from the future? It certainly looks like that could be a possibility and it seems like Kara is going to need something more than Earth’s yellow sunlight to bring her back to full health.
We also see three Legion rings in the promo and I think that we can assume that one is Mon-El‘s (Chris Wood) and one is Imra‘s (Amy Jackson)…though not sure who the third belongs to. Hopefully we’ll get answers as to whether they already had the rings in the future or if they attain them in the past, since there was that one in Clark’s Fortress of Solitude. Nevertheless, it seems like people are going to try to combat Reign as best they can with Supergirl down for the count and the Legion of Superheroes are definitely part of it.
The big interesting thing in this trailer is Kara’s voiceover. “Reign is still out there. People are dying. I have to wake up.” At first I thought that maybe they rigged something up to communicate with Kara while she was under the control of the Black Mercy in For The Girl Who Has Everything (1×13), but after watching it a few times I have another idea. Before Kara’s voice over where it sounds like a conversation that she’s having knowing that she’s in that pod, she’s responding to a man’s voice who first says, “Reign defeated you”. I am starting to think that the man’s voice is Thomas Coville (Chad Lowe) and he’s supposed to be a catalyst in order to get Kara to wake up and push her to fully believe in herself again. Though Coville thinks of Kara/Supergirl as a god, I think that this ties into the theme of the season which is what does it mean to be human. If Coville believes her to be a god and he was saved on that plane that went down with Alex on board, Kara’s first save, then that is the Kara he sees as a god…the one that was far more human than Kryptonian in that moment. So, I am hoping that this will bring us back to the sunny Kara that we know and love.
