The first news about this incident was received after noon. According to reports, a portion of the parking garage's rooftop level collapsed onto the ramp between floors, sending piles of snow and concrete down to ground level.

Chief Robert Whitaker of the North Shore Fire Department said, “Literally from the third floor down, it is a wide open hole.” He added, “The third floor is in the first floor right now.”

However, mall shoppers and employees describe the event as terrific, reporting that they heard loud booms and the buildings shaking. However, it was confirmed that no one was hurt.

The surveillance footage from the garage, which was captured from two locations, affirmed that no cars or pedestrians were involved, as confirmed by officials during a press conference later that evening. However, two vehicles were damaged, but no one was in the cars.

Why did the Parking Garage Collapse at Bayshore Mall?

According to Whitaker, there might be other causes of the collapse. Still, the incident must have resulted from a pile of ploughed snow on the top floor of the parking structure, owing that the overconcentration of the snow in one spot could be a factor.

In his words, Denny VanCleve, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sullivan, said, “It can be deceiving,”. “It doesn't seem like much but the piles are going to weigh much more than two inches of snow would.”

Which Part of the Garage Collapsed?

The partially collapsed garage is outside the mall's Trader Joe's grocery store at 5600 N. Port Washington Road. Here, there are three levels specifically designed for parking. The affected level is tagged as the Yellow Garage and referred to as the Silver Spring parking garage, built between 2005 and 2006.

The Effect of the Collapse at Bayshore Mall

Matthew Williamson, Milwaukee Deputy Fire Chief, described the collapsed area as a portion of concrete about 50 feet long and 20 feet wide dropping on the structure's top floor. Whitaker also told the area, saying, “The third floor is in the first floor right now,”.

However, businesses in the Bayshore mall did not close down after the incident. Most of the retail stores remained open after the collapse. Although, about 56 cars are stuck in the garage, and this could take a month or more to get the vehicles out since the parking garage's sole ramp got destroyed in the incident and will need to be reconstructed.
