True Blood’s Marshall Allman stars in a new film, “Blue Like Jazz” which begins with Marshall as Donald Miller, explaining the elements of a good story. Donald is a Southern Baptist college student hiding his background so he can find himself and his creative voice. As for Marshall, the Austin High School grad is convincing and lovable as a Texan trying to fit in at a progressive college.
The movie based on Donald Miller’s best-selling book about himself by the same name, Blue Like Jazz. It’s a Christian movie, but it’s not that kind of Christian movie. It’s PG-13 and has sex, drugs, booze and bad language.
The talented cast was definitely one of the reasons why the fans of the book funded the movie through a Kickstarter campaign whcih raised $345,992.
Setting – Texan Donald Miller moves to Portland and drafts a collection of quirky autobiographical essays that discuss “Non-Religious Thoughts on Christian Spirituality.” Don has some hostility towards the church and he turns that anger into liberation. The book makes the top seller list and a movie deal is signed.
