So what do you do when you are an actor and proud of your work and want to share it with your family, but you spend a good chunk of your on-screen time naked? Well if you are Joe Manganiello, who plays the often naked werewolf Alcide Herveaux on HBO‘s True Blood, you tell your mom not to watch. Joe just recently did some promo interviews in Australia and he spoke to The Age about Alcide’s aggressiveness, the male fans that pretend they want his autograph for their wives, and his preference to being considered a role model vs. a sex symbol. Enjoy the video!
Joe also did an “How I Unwind” question and answer with them and we have those answers for you below!
I was last excited by…
The dumplings at Mr Wong [in Sydney city]. And the Peking duck pancakes were really good, too.
I like listening to …
Die Antwoord. There are just crazy. I’m kind of obsessed with them.My vice is …
Cuban cigars.
The last thing I read …
Was a comic book. It was recommended to me by my friend – it is called Irredeemable. It’s basically about what if the world’s greatest hero became the world’s greatest villain.
My favorite TV show as a kid was …
G.I. Joe. I had all the figures. I think I liked the bad guys more than the good guys.
The last movie I watched was …
Pacific Rim, where they actually destroyed the Sydney Opera House in the first five minutes.
I was a movie buff growing up but …
I’m now a TV buff because I think cable TV is better than movies. I’m tired of being disappointed when I go to the movie theater. I don’t get that way with TV shows. I think real creativity and genius storytelling in this day and age is on TV.
The greatest piece of advice I’ve ever received …
Was ”learn how to say no”. I didn’t take it at the time but now that I’m older and wiser I definitely listen to it. To have any sort of successful career in the arts in LA, you have to learn how to do that. Not taking that advice forced me to clean up a massive mess. You can get into a lot of trouble when you’re young and you’ve got money. You can wake up 10 years later and be really far away from who you set out to be.
I am inspired by…
My group of friends. They are phenomenal people but also phenomenal artists. A really good friend of mine is Shepard Fairey, the street artist who became probably one of the greatest modern artists of today … Another friend is a DJ Z-Trip – he’s actually this one-man orchestra … Also DJ Dieselboy, and once again this incredible artist, very articulate and smart about what he does. All of us get together whenever we’re in the city and talk about the world, art and life.
I train …
Twice a day, six days a week, for True Blood.
My favorite physical activity is …
Napping. Sleeping is when your body regenerates. It’s the biggest part of training.
The best part of being on True Blood is …
The popularity of the show. I get to travel the world. I think it’s more popular in Australia than anywhere I’ve been.
The worst part is …
The paparazzi and autograph hounds. A bit of my privacy is gone.
I like to unwind …
On my couch with my giant TV.
