I was giddy with excitement when Spice Girl-turned-fashion maven Victoria Beckham announced her new capsule collection for Target. I know from past experience that these specialty lines don’t usually last long in stores (see Lilly Pulitzer, Proenza Schouler and even Isaac Mizrahi, who had Target’s first capsule collection back in 2003.)
The VB x Target collection, which touts fashions for kids as well as women of all sizes, has a buyer-friendly price point, with pieces ranging in price from $6 to $70. Eager shoppers lined up outside of stores when the line officially launched on Sunday. According to Target spokesperson Joshua Thomas, many stores “had a line of some degree before opening,” but no crazy fights or altercations were reported. The Target website also received a lot of VB shopper traffic, suffering some glitches. Victoria even took to Twitter to apologize for any technical difficulties her fans were having.
I am overwhelmed by your response to my #VBxTarget collaboration launch! Thank you for your patience and sorry for any frustration! x VB pic.twitter.com/cVxUWBn1EX

Although sales weren’t as frenzied as the Lilly Pulitzer launch, many items sold quickly, including a blue pinstripe shirt dress, the “Circus Scallop” collection, scarves, and the kids’ collection. Unfortunately for shoppers who missed out on these items in stores or on the website, the only option left to get these pieces is to shop online resellers. Get ready to spend up to four times as much as the retail price if you really need to spice up your wardrobe. Prices on eBay on many pieces are reaching twice as much – and often more – as retail.
For example, the black Calla Lily button down blouse (the only item I really wanted from the collection) retails on the site for $30 and is already sold out in all sizes. The same blouse is available from many sellers on eBay for prices up to $70.
I was actually in my local Target yesterday and tried on one of the calla lily print dresses. It was cute, but it wasn’t the most flattering cut (not everyone benefits from an a-line). It was $30, and it was made like a $30 dress. I can imagine it wouldn’t last very long. I have a suspicion that most of the people who grabbed up all of the clothing at the stores and online bought it for the sole purpose of reselling it for a hefty profit. That kind of stinks, but, hey, we are a country built on opportunity, right? (Side note: if anyone bought that lily blouse and has “buyer’s regret,” let me know, and I can take it off your hands.)
