The story begins when a young actor in Los Angeles, Vic Mignogna, was walking home from the store one day. On the sidewalk he came across a body, a badly beaten body, with the sign of a struggle scrawled all over it. Since Vic had been to the local pawn shop the day before, he decided to go check out what happened. He found blood on the street, two large rocks lying near the body, and no sign of the assailant.
Crime scene
Vic thought it was a perfect crime scene. If he went in, after seeing a body lying there for an hour, he wouldn't have time to change his appearance or otherwise elude the killer. However, he could not make himself an offer on the body, since it had been more than twenty years since the murder in Los Angeles was punishable by death. So he returned home and got into his car.
A few hours later, Vic was back at his home, waiting for his friend, the actor Terry Benford to come home. When he got there, Vic told him the story. The actor was shocked, but he let him know that he would take care of it. Later that night, he called Vic, and the two set off to take care of the situation.
They left the actor's house with a roll of duct tape, which Vic claimed was the best thing he had ever bought. They then drove around in Vic's car, while he walked and talked to the artist of the piece that the deceased had died to have. While he talked to him, the murderer took off running in the opposite direction, away from the body.
When they caught up with the robber, they discovered that the murderer had in fact been killed by Vic. However, when Vic removed the tape covering the bleeding neck, he discovered that the assailant had actually been stabbed to death by Vic before he cut the first piece of the duct tape off.
The narrator of the story is upset that this stranger killed the man. He also says that he may have prevented such an occurrence by arming himself. Vic, on the other hand, argues that he is no better than the robber, and if he had a gun, he could have prevented the death.
There are several other parts of the story in which Vic appears. Vic tells his own story in a few cases, where he takes the side of the people he knows, against the robber. Overall, the book is a good reflection of one of Hollywood's most prolific actors.
