A senior police officer said that a person who was riding a motorcycle with his sister’s two children on New Year’s Day was shot dead with a T-56 weapon in Ahungalla Middaramulla area by two persons who also came on a motorcycle.
Police said the it has received information that the killing was carried out according to a contract of an underworld criminal involved in drug trafficking based in Dubai.
The deceased is a person named Tharindu Dhanushka Nisansala Silva (29) resident of Ahungalla Middaramulla. Two children aged five and one and a half years old were on the motorcycle when the shooting took place. The two children were also injured and admitted to the Balapitiya hospital as the motorcycle toppled after the rider was shot.
It is said that the murdered person is a multi-day fishing vessel owner. Police say that there is information that he was to be married to the daughter of a drug trafficker. A senior police officer said that it appears that the shooting was the result of a dispute over drug trafficking.
