Colombo Additional Magistrate Manjula Ratnayake yesterday ordered that Ven.Uvathenne Sumana Thera, who was remanded in connection with a fraud involving the purchase of Rs.50.7 million worth of coconut oil, be further remanded until December 22.

The monk is accused of committing fraud by obtaining coconut oil worth nearly Rs.50.7 million rupees from a private company and paying with bounced cheques.

In connection with this incident, a complaint had been submitted to the Commercial Crime Investigation Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department by the manager of the private company in Dematagoda.

The Criminal Investigation Department had earlier told court that while appearing as a director of a private company of the same name the monk had obtained 84,240 kilos of coconut oil worth Rs. Rs.50.7 million and issued eight cheques for it, but later those cheques became invalid and he cheated without paying for the purchase.
